Family-Friendly Museums and Historic Sites in Minnesota
Minnesota is filled with amazing things to see, and I know, as a parent, that this is just about that time in summer when we’re all getting a bit ready for fall. The kids are bored, the parents are tired, and you’re running out of fun activities.
Before the school bells are ringing, there is still time to make amazing memories with your family as we wrap up the summer season. Check out some of these great spots to teach your children a touch of history, art, or culture before they’re buried back into the books!

The Minnesota Sculpture Garden
This hot spot in Minnesota is right in the heart of Minneapolis. Not only is it a fun, outdoor activity, but it brings a touch of art to the family outing. Plus, the entire 60-sculpture display is free of charge for those of all ages to enjoy.
Glensheen - The Historic Congdon Estate
This 39-room mansion is located on a 12-acre estate. Beyond its astonishing views and intricate designs, this Duluth-based wonder also has a vast history. The Congdons built the mansion between 1905 and 1908 as they brought iron mining to the region.
Visitors can see Chester’s top hat still in his closet and Clara’s letters still on her desk. This is a wonderful step back in time that can teach all ages about the state’s rich history.
The Cathedral of St. Paul
In St. Paul, visitors can take in this amazing 1915 structure which includes six different chapels. Guided tours are available to take in more than the scenery. Guests can learn about the expansive history of not only the church, but also the city of St. Paul.
Museum of Illusions
Of course, the Mall of America in Bloomington is a well-visited attraction in Minnesota. But did you know that beyond the dining and shopping opportunities, the mall also houses the Museum of Illusions? Nothing is as it appears as you wander through unique displays of visually confusing and wonderful exhibits.
The Science Museum of Minnesota
The kids may balk at the thought of science in the summer, but once they’re face-to-face with the skeleton of the triceratops dinosaur, they’ll quickly forget they’re learning.
Located in St. Paul, this museum of science is anything but a long, boring lecture. Interactive displays keep the kids' minds and hands busy while they learn some great life lessons.
