Campfire Cuisine: Fun Recipes for Minnesota Summers

When you live in the Land of 10,000 Lakes like we do, you’re spending much of the warm, summer months enjoying the great outdoors! But, no matter where we roam, the family has to eat, right?

If you are sick of the same old dishes, maybe it is time to get creative around the campfire. There are plenty of great dishes, for morning, noon, and night. No matter how old your kids are, you’re bound to create some happy campers with these tasty treats.

Pudgie Pies

Fireside chats aren’t just for ghost stories. It is also a great time to make a meal of it, too! Pudgy pies - also sometimes known as mountain pies or toasties - make for a great option no matter the time of day. From the traditional pizza pies, to a go-to PB&J, some of the family’s favorites can be all the more delicious and fun around the campfire as a pudgy pie.

Try some of these fun tips to mix-up the mundane and create some pudgy pie munchies!

  • Mix your favorite lunch meat and cheese, like ham and swiss.

  • Add a burger: not only is it a great way to use up leftovers from the barbecue but a tasty treat. Pile on the toppings and enjoy!

  • Canned fruit pie fillings make a great and easy option

  • Pie for breakfast?! Add some eggs, cooked breakfast meats and cheese and you’ll have a wake-up call for any taste buds!

S’more Fun for All

Of course if you have been camping a day in your life, you know about the almighty S’more. But, have you tried to concoct some new combinations? Try these ideas for fresh, new fun:

  • Add a Reese’s peanut butter cup or York Peppermint Patty instead of the traditional Hershey’s bar for a unique taste combination.

  • Exchange the stand-by graham crackers for a different crunch. Bring a salty snack into the mix with pretzels, chips, or even crackers. Premade cookies can also make for a tasty treat.

  • Lining your graham crackers with peanut butter spread before the marshmallow can give you a fluffernutter fit for a king.

  • Swap your Hershey’s milk chocolate for alternative flavors, such as the cookies and cream variety for a different flavor of fun!

Foil Dinners (or Lunches or Breakfasts or Snacks…)

Another simple way to cook on the open fire is the basic foil dinner. Nearly any combination of meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, or starches can be mixed into a foil packet. Simply create a “sealed envelope” with your heavy duty aluminum foil. From there, the only limit is your imagination. \

Try a few of our favorite combinations for a great meal choice, no matter what time of day it is:

  • Cubed ham, cubed potatoes, cheese

  • Scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese

  • Broccoli crowns and cheese

  • Mixed veggies and ground beef

  • Chicken cubes, hot sauce, and bleu cheese crumbles

Wrap and create your own flavor combinations. Tightly roll your edges, place in the hot coals of the fire, allow to cook, and enjoy!

So which of these fun campfire classics will you mix-up this summer? Leave a comment over on Facebook - we look forward to reading it!
